Zubrowka ズブロッカ「早口言葉」

Weblish has been making videos with support from Zubrowka since 2009.
Our video on “tongue twisters” has been an annual favorite with fans.
Most recently, Weblish and Zubrowka created a new video in Yoyogi Park, Tokyo where several people celebrating the cherry blossoms tried their best to say challenging phrases.

Along with our annual “tongue twister” videos, Weblish also does special videos that blend in fun and learning. In 2010, Weblish made a video at a Zubrowka sponsored party with one of its characters, Abdul, and taught how to order a Zubrowka drink and how to enjoy a night with Zubrowka at a part.

In April, Japan will once again welcome the blossoming of “sakura” or cherry blossoms all around the country.
The blossoms first bloom in west in Kyushu and gradually move eastward towards Kansai, Kanto, Tohoku and Hokkaido.
Where are the best places to view the cherry blossoms in your area?

Here are 5 sentences with “cherry blossom” in English.

今日の慣用句はPaint the town redです。直訳すると「町を赤く塗りましょう。」ですが、これが「パーッと行こう！」「酒を飲みに行こう。」という意味になります。

Weblish goes widescreen 16:9 for internet videos

Weblish will be changing it’s format from it’s 4:3 videographic aspect ratio to 16:9 widescreen, the standard for high-definition (HD).

Pixel size:
4:3 = 640 × 480
16:9 = 720 x 480

The first iPod in 2006 was best viewed in 4:3 but since HD video and online streaming sites have switched to a wider format, Weblish will conform to the changing nature of video. Today, many people still use computer monitors with a 4:3 aspect ratio but the vast majority of new monitors are wide screen. Mobile devices are best in a 16:9 ratio. The 16:9 format will allow more space for computer graphics as well as a higher quality.

Starting in February 2012, Weblish plans to release all videos in 720p and use 1080p by 2013. Due to the amount of data and layers involved in video editing and rendering, it takes too much time to create videos in full HD, and since the vast majority of users watch our videos on mobile devices with smaller screen, 720p should be adequate for online streaming and viewing on portable devices.
As the technology to edit video evolves and more power becomes available to independent video producers, the quality of our shows will also improve.

The TOEIC Men meet!

Today, I met with Yamauchi-san, the top TOEIC instructor in Japan. He’s scored a perfect 990 on the TOEIC test every time he took it! He also scored a perfect 400 on the TOEIC SW Speaking&Writing test.
He will be helping me with my Weblish show “TOEIC GAME SHOW,” especially with the TOEIC questions which he has created himself.
The students who he helped are very happy and have improved their TOEIC scores a lot. It’s an important test for people who want jobs overseas or promotions at work. Some students need it to go to a good university.

The title of my talk was “”Video: Think Big!” and my overall message was that “Anything is possible with video”. The talk also included a video where I went to the moon and asked myself questions.

Weblish is working closely with Qooco and Qooco Japan to make fun lessons online using new technology with speech recognition.
The application allows students to practice what they learn by speaking and the system checks pronunciation patterns and gauges the level and speed.
Unlike a lot of other online applications and software for learning English, Qooco’s ASR (Automated Speech Recognition) helps students actively with their speaking, the most difficult part of communicating for English learners in Japan.
Weblish will feature it’s videos in conjunction with Qooco’s ASR software to give students a full 360 degree lesson of reading, listening, and speaking. Qooco also has applications for writing. As the service moves entirely to the cloud across all computer platforms, smart phones and tablet computers with built-in microphones will help the service really take off — where the cloud’s the limit.
The first series Qooco has created with Weblish is “Reverse Engineering English | リバース・エンジニアリング・英語”

Here is a series of short videos Weblish produced for Qooco to demonstrate the technology. The company has initially released a few of its services in Japan with much more coming in the next few months. This video focuses on kid’s lessons.
